Printers are devices that are mainly attached to computers. Their main function is to receive data and produce them on paper or similar media. Other printers are fitted with an optical hardware that enables the reproduction of finished documents and images. These types of printers are called photocopiers which use xerographic technology. This technology was first introduced by the company Xerox in the 1960’s, obviating the need for carbon papers, mimeograph machines, Photostats, and other copying machines. This type of printer is very widely used in the present day.

At first, the usual process went this way: one typed on a typewriter, then placed what he typed on a copier to replicate it. However, the integration of printers with computers has made the process of making multiple copies of a printed page a lot easier than it used to be. Documents can be typed and stored in a computer and can be printed out any time, and as many times as possible.

The various types of printers have different qualities. For example, the inkjet printer propels droplets of ink onto any medium, while the dot matrix printer strikes an ink-soaked ribbon and draws letters or images out of a dot matrix.

Printers use ink cartridges for their printing tasks. Older models still use ink-soaked ribbons, but the standard these days are ink cartridges. These cartridges vary depending on their brand, class, and usage. There are certain cartridges that are used solely for printing photographs, and some are solely for printing documents.

Furthermore, some cartridges only work on certain printers. When a printer is about to run out of ink, it will print out a notice that the cartridge is almost empty. Also, there are two cartridges in a a printer; one contains black ink, and the other contains inks of various colours. In some printers, if either one runs out of ink, the printer will not print anything, and the empty cartridge must be immediately replaced. In other printers, if the cartridge with colored inks has run out, one can still print with black ink.

Usually, ink cartridges are very expensive. And because of this, consumers are forced to purchase other compatible brands. Although they do not meet the exact quality of the printer manufacturer’s ink, it really does come close. Other consumers slightly modify their printers and make use of external ink tanks instead of ink cartridges. This method really allows them to save some money but also increases the risk of damages that their printer may sustain. For example, a leaky tube that connects the external ink tanks to the printer may cause the printer to cease functioning if the ink seeps into the printer mechanism and its wirings.

True enough, external ink tanks are easy to refill if these run out of ink. However, the risks these pose on the well-being of your printer is not worth it. Even if it is quite a task to eject the old cartridge and install a new one, the productivity, functionality, and safety of a printer should always come to mind.
